Alta Mira is Going Green!Gree tree icon

The times are changing and so are we.  In the face of the difficult economic climate, we want you to know that we are doing everything possible to minimize our operating costs.  And, we're redoubling our commitment to be environmentally responsible as well.  Here are just a few of the steps we've taken to reduce our energy costs so we can divert that money in the fulfillment of our mission:Photo of Alta Mira's Respite Home

•  Through a generous grants from  PNM Fund, a division of the PNM Resources Foundation, we have replaced the windows on the second floor of our early intervention program building.  The new windows are energy efficient and we've already seen savings in our energy consumption, not to mention the increased comfort of those who spend time in the building.

•  Also, through the generosity of the PNM Fund, we've replaced our old light bulbs with energy-efficient CFL bulbs in all our buildings lamps and free-standing lighting fixtures.  The new bulbs require less energy and last several years longer than traditional bulbs.

•  Our recycling program, which was already robust, has received new attention.  We dare you to find much, if any, paper, cardboard, plastic or aluminum going into our trash.  If it's recyclable, we're doing it.

•  We're installed automatic dispensing machines for soap and paper towels in our facility restrooms.  Paper usage has decreased as a result.

The most surprising thing we've learned as we continue to move toward greater self-sufficiency is that it's just not that hard to do.

So, we're challenging you to do the same in your own home or business.  Here are some easy steps to help you get started:

•  Reduce your hot water use.  Water heating represents about 13 percent of an average energy bill.
•  Wash your clothes in the coldest water recommended for the fabric.  It'll save money and make your clothes look better, longer.
•  Take showers instead of baths.
•  Run dishwashers only when full.
•  Install low flow shower heads and faucets.
•  Insulate your water heater with an inexpensive water heater blanket.
•  Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees.
